Benjamin Leopold Farjeon (1838-1903) was an English novelist, playwright, printer and journalist, known for his huge output. He was born in London to parents who were Orthodox Jews and raised in Whitechapel. He received no formal secular education and aged fourteen he joined the Nonconformist, a Christian journal, to learn the printing trade. He broke away from the strict faith of his father and in 1854 left for Australia where he first worked as a gold miner and later started a newspaper. In 1861 he moved to New Zealand, settling in Dunedin where he worked as a journalist for the Otago Daily Times, and later became manager and sub-editor. At this time he began writing novels and plays, attracting the attention of Charles Dickens. In 1868 he returned to England and over the next 35 years produced nearly 60 novels. This work was first published in 1888.
