  • When I Was a Young Man: A Memoir

    Bob Kerrey, Audible Studios

Audible Audiobook (Audible Studios, Dec. 16, 2014)
Bob Kerrey grew up outside Lincoln, Nebraska, in the 1950s, and in his trademark style - serious, sometimes wry - he tells of his journey from that heartland to the dangers of Vietnam, to the hospitals where he recovered from his grievous injuries, and finally to the Nixon White House where he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Inspired by the stories of biblical heroes and thrilled by the cowboy serials he saw at the movies on Saturday afternoons, Kerrey grew up in a world as safe and quiet as anywhere you could find on Earth. When he went off to college he knew or cared little about what lay beyond Nebraska, though soon his life would be changed forever. Bob Kerrey comes from a family of soldiers, and so, when the Vietnam draft loomed, he volunteered for the elite Navy SEALS, hoping for adventure and the honor of serving his country. After his arrival in Vietnam, he had to face the brutal reality of the war. In his first firefight, women and children died. His second encounter cost him part of his leg. In his year at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, he drew strength from his fellow patients, some more disabled than he, and he learned to walk again. But he had turned against the war and could no longer find solace in his religion. A quest begins and ends this audiobook. When his father was dying, he asked Kerrey to find out how his Uncle John had really died in World War II. It is this quest that inspires Bob Kerrey as he narrates his own personal odyssey in this remarkable and powerful book.

  • Great Men of Genius, Part 2: P. T. Barnum

    Mike Daisey, Audible Studios

Audible Audiobook (Audible Studios, Aug. 12, 2008)
Monologist Mike Daisey presents a dazzling new work: four "bio-logues" about megalomania and desire constructed from the interleaved life stories of Bertolt Brecht, P.T. Barnum, Nikola Tesla, and L. Ron Hubbard. Over four nights Daisey explores the nature of genius and wrestles with the pride, insanity, and chauvinism that bind these men together, and reveals how the heights and depths of their gifts have much to teach us about ourselves. Each evening is unique and can be listened to independently, but all four together form an epic oral accounting of triumph and folly told with Daisey's dark and hilarious intensity. P.T. Barnum was a gifted entrepreneur, showman, raconteur, hoaxster, and freakshow and circus promoter who changed the face of 19th century America through blatant, shameless lying.

On his way out of the forest, he collected wild berries and in the village sold them. He went and collected more berries and kept on until he had enough until he could buy a knife. When he showed it to the magpie, she said it wasn't nice enough, and now she wanted a horse and sleigh. He used the knife and began carving little figures. He bought a horse and sleigh. But she wanted a white horse, not a black one, and now she wanted a castle and chests filled with gold. He used the sleigh to offer rides. He bought more sleighs and horses. Finally he had enough for the castle. He built the castle and worked on until he had the chests of money. He invited the magpie to come. She allowed him to put salt on her tail. He began thinking of what to wish for. The magpie waited. She said, "You took too long" and began to fly away. The boy grabbed a small statue to throw at the Magpie when she landed on a cross beam and pointed out that the boy had all that he ever wished for, and he had done it all himself.
  • 3 Loaves of Bread: A Middle Eastern Folktale

    Bill Gordh, Audible Studios

Audible Audiobook (Audible Studios, March 26, 2015)
Award-winning storyteller Bill Gordh (Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence winner, National Association of Parenting Periodicals Gold Award winner) presents this folk tale live with no script, accompanied only by his own dynamic banjo playing. An old woman who mended nets for the fishermen was out of work for the winter and had run out of food. She begged for flour to make some bread. Finally, a wealthy neighbor let her sweep the flour from the floor of his store room. It was enough to bake three loaves! Just as she removed the three loaves from her oven, there was a knock on the door. A man was there begging for food. He had been robbed. She gave him a loaf. A little later there was another knock. It was man whose house had just burned down. She gave him the second loaf. Soon after he was gone, the door blew open and the wind swept in and carried her last loaf out the door and out across the sea. She ran out to watch it happened and yelled at the wind. All night she wondered why this had happened. The next day she went to the king, King Solomon, and told him she wanted him to punish the wind. The king said that must wait until the end of the day when the wind was through doing its job of moving sailboats across the sea. Soon some merchants came in with bags of gold - 7,000 pieces. King Solomon asked why they brought it, and they said they had been at sea in a huge storm - their big boat was tossed about in the sea and a hole opened up in the side of the boat. They prayed that if they came out safe they would give 10% of their cargo. They had come out of the storm safe, and so they brought the king the 7,000 gold coins to give to someone worthy. King Solomon asked how their boat survived with a hole in it. They said a loaf of bread that was blowing in the wind had plugged the hole. They held it up. It was the third loaf of bread and King Solomon gave the woman the gold.
