About the Book Books on the history of Scandinavia discuss the history of the geographical region of Scandinavia and its peoples. The region is in northern Europe, and at its core consists of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Finland and Iceland are sometimes considered part of Scandinavia. During the Viking Age, Scandinavian warriors and traders raided, colonized and explored regions throughout Europe, the Middle East, northern Africa, and as far west as Newfoundland. The Kalmar Union between Denmark, Norway and Sweden was a series of personal unions (1397–1520) uniting the three kingdoms under a single monarch. The Kalmar War of 1611-1613 was the final failed attempt by the Danish King, Christian IV, to re-unite the Kalmar Union. The Swedish Empire's rise to power began under Charles IX, and after wars progressed under Charles XI. The Great Northern War (1700-1721) saw a coalition of Russia, Denmark-Norway and Saxony-Poland invade Sweden, and at its conclusion Russia became the dominant power on the Baltic Sea. Denmark-Norway tried to maintain neutrality in the Napoleonic Wars, but was drawn into the conflict when the British demanded its navy, and then attacked the Danish fleet at the battle of Copenhagen (1801), and later bombarded Copenhagen (1807). Scandinavia was able to maintain neutrality in World War 1, although many ethnic Danes from southern Jutland fought in the German army. During the German occupation of World War 2, Norway's Quisling collaborationist Government worked for the occupiers. Only Sweden was not invaded by the Nazis, and remained nominally neutral throughout. Norway and Denmark later were signatories and members of NATO, while Sweden remained neutral.About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades.
