In 1980 the author and her son spent ten days in Egypt, a land of ancient sights and customs. They explored the beautiful old city of Cairo, where an animal lay dying in the street near their hotel. One day they visited a perfume "factory," sitting in a room with velvet walls. They rented a car to drive south along the Nile River, discovering ways of life that were amazing. Sincere friendliness by many was mixed with greediness by a few. Leaving Cairo they thought they'd become familiar with unusual sights, only to be surprised by ones never imagined! After the magic of seeing the pyramids, sights were full of beauty mixed with horror as they motored south. And long after the trip they discovered an eerie secret, that of "routine" check-ins on the road south from Cairo. In Luxor they stayed at the luxurious Winter Palace hotel, empty in the hot summer. On little donkeys they rode into the famous Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens in temps up to 124 degrees, with moisture trickling down their bodies as they explored underground tombs. It was a trip never to be forgotten, and the author shares her photos of sights we may never experience ourselves. This is a book of history, travel, customs, great beauty and personal information, one for all ages.
