  • Bright Ideas: The Age of Invention in America 1870-1910

    Ann Rossi

Library Binding (National Geographic Children's Books, Aug. 1, 2005)
Imagine that you couldn't turn on a light by flipping a switch, had no telephone on which to call your friends, and that there were no traffic lights on the roads! Seem impossible? Well it wasn't-none of these things existed before the Age of Invention in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bright Ideas tells the story of these and other miraculous inventions that have shaped the world we know today. Learn how inventive minds work and how they overcame obstacles on the path to their great achievements. Read about the building of a brighter America-one that learned how to make a telephone call from coast to coast and took to the road in Henry Ford's cars built on the first assembly lines. Even flying in the air became attainable! This age and the inventors who contributed to it paved the way for the future of America and revolutionized the way this country works, produces, and lives. Bright Ideas illuminates this exciting period in time for all its readers and may inspire even greater inventions or future inventors. Like the others in the series, ,Bright Ideas is illustrated with period photographs, paintings, and drawings. Also included are a glossary and an index.

  • Freedom Struggle: The Anti-Slavery Movement 1830-1865

    Ann Rossi

Library Binding (National Geographic Children's Books, Jan. 1, 2005)
By 1860 nearly 4 million black people were slaves in the United States. The lives of these people were very difficult and provided them no freedoms. In the early part of the 19th century, rumblings from people who felt that slavery was wrong began to surface. These people came to be known as abolitionists. Freedom Struggle tells the story of the fight they waged to end slavery in America. The reader will learn about leaders of the anti-slavery movement, including Frederick Douglass, the Grimkes, Harriet Tubman, and John Brown, among others, and how members of the Underground Railroad helped slaves escape the South to the free states of the North. The slavery debate took over and divided the nation, becoming one of the primary issues of the Civil War and threatening to destroy our country. Examples of arguments from opposing sides are found in this book. After many struggles and many years, constitutional amendments (the 13th and the 14th) were passed giving black Americans greater civil liberties and ended slavery in the U.S. The abolitionists had won! Like the other books in the series, Freedom Struggle is illustrated with period photographs, paintings and drawings. Also included are a glossary and an index.
