  • The Youngest Girl in the Fifth - A School Story

    Angela Brazil

Paperback (School Story Classics, Nov. 22, 2017)
A classic fictional tale of life at an English "all girls" school, Angela Brazil's "The Youngest Girl in the Fifth" follows the travails and triumphs of Gwen, the youngest girl in her year at a traditional boarding school. Charming and entertaining, it is highly recommended for young girls and those with an interest in early schoolgirls' stories. Angela Brazil (1868 - 1947) was an English author most famous for being one of the first writers of "modern schoolgirls' stories". Her stories were presented from the characters' point of view and were written primarily as entertainment rather than moral instruction. During the first half of the 20th century, Brazil published nearly 50 such books, with the vast majority being set in English boarding schools. Brazil's work had a significant influence on changing the nature of fiction for girls. Her charters were chiefly young females, active, independent, and aware. Brazil's books were often considered to be immoral and deviant, leading to their being burned or banned by many Headteachers in girls schools across Britain. Other notable works by this author include: "The School in the Forest" (1944), "Three Terms at Uplands" (1945), "The School on the Loch" (1946). Contents include: "The Gascoyne Girls", "A False Step", "A Delicate Transaction", "Trouble in the Fifth", "A Casting Vote", "Dick Chambers", "Gwen Receives a Letter", "Keeping Christmas", "A Prodigal", "A Prize Essay", etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially-commissioned new biography of the author.

    Angela Brazil

Paperback (CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, July 6, 2015)
"Only one day more," cried Patty Hirst, surveying with deep interest the large new box which stood by the side of the chest of drawers in her bedroom; "just one day! How dreadfully quickly the time has come! I feel quite queer when I think about it. I can scarcely believe that before the end of the week both I and my luggage will be a whole hundred miles away, and settled at Morton Priory. I do wonder how I shall like it?"

As part of our on-going commitment to delivering value to the reader, we have also provided you with a link to a website, where you may download a digital version of this work for free. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. It was the first week of the summer term at Winterburn Lodge. Afternoon preparation was over, and most of the girls had left the classroom for a chat and a stroll round the playground until the tea-bell should ring. From the tennis court came the sounds of the soft thud of balls and a few excited voices recording the score; while through the open windows of the house floated the strains of three pianos, on which three separate pieces were being practised in three different keys, the mingled result forming a particularly inharmonious jangle.
