Sunflowers: Surviving Girlhood is a collection of coming-of-age short stories that reveals the love, pain, betrayal, shame and redemption of each unique character. The book opens with "Homecoming," a heartwarming story about a young woman who recalls the day she learned that she was being uprooted from her beloved friends and neighborhood. In "Fostered Love, Lena struggles to settle into a new foster home, and in "Another Day in the City," Lala copes with her parents' divorce and the resulting financial challenges her family faces. The other stories deal with heavier issues including teen pregnancy, child abuse, and incest. Thus, Sunflowers gives voice to a subset among marginalized groups--young black girls.
