Our Friends the BEESBees are a major part of agriculture, with their natural honey making activity making them the most effective pollinators. Discover the world of bees in this childrens book written to spark interest in young biologists. Some of the interesting facts from the bookBees have been on earth since flowers evolved around the time of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago or more, and all that time they have been doing the fantastic job of fertilizing plants.Today scientist calculate that if we didn't have bees the human race would not be able to grow enough food to survive.Bees belong to the same family as Wasps and Ants and are six legged insects.Like ants, Bees have a Queen, Male drones, and sterile female workers. The Queen bee is 50% larger than the other females and spends her entire life laying eggs, as many as 2000 a day even though she mates only once. Honeybees represent a complex society, with various bees having very special roles during their lifetime: for instance, nurses, guards, grocers, housekeepers, construction workers, royal attendants, undertakers, foragers, etc.The queen bee can live for several years. Worker bees live for about 6 weeks during the busy summer, and for 4-9 months during the winter months. The life of a honeybee hive is continual. Although quite inactive during the winter, the honeybee survives the winter months by clustering for warmth. By self-regulating the internal temperature of the cluster, the bees maintain 93 degrees Fahrenheit in the centre of the winter (regardless of the outside temperature). Likewise in summer they cool the hive to 93 degrees.
