  • Software Defined Radio: for Amateur Radio Operators and Shortwave Listeners

    Andrew Barron

eBook (Andrew Barron, Nov. 27, 2016)
This book is intended for Amateur Radio Operators, Shortwave Listeners, and anyone interested in radio as a hobby. It includes sections on how different types of software defined radios work, the advantages of using them, and how they are tested. It also covers future trends including the development of Direct Fourier Conversion. There is a big section with tips for PowerSDR users and sections about other commonly used SDR software, plus a comparison of the basic specifications of 65 different SDR receivers and transceivers. The book is not a textbook or a reference book. It is written in an easy to read conversational style. I explain the basics without getting too technical. There are no pages of software code or complex mathematics. I find that simple diagrams can often make things easier to understand so I have included some helpful drawings and photographs. The book contains sections on: •What to look for when buying an SDR•What is different about SDR?•What computer skills do you need?•What is digital? – a brief recap on digital theory•Definitions of software defined radio•Generations and types of SDR•Are SDRs better?•Future trends•Common questions about SDR •SDR software on the PC•Audio connections for digital modes•SDR for shortwave listening, CW, digital modes, contesting, interference monitoring, EME, microwave, and satellite operation•SoftRock, Genesis radios, RTL dongle, FUNcube dongle, USB connected receivers, USRP, Noctar, HackRF and Blade RF•SDRs with knobs•On-board or external DSP?•FlexRadio Systems transceivers and SmartSDR•Apache Labs ANAN transceivers and PowerSDR•cuSDR, KISS Konsole, SDR#, and GNU radio software•I and Q signals, Quadrature sampling, Direct Digital Synthesis, Direct Fourier Conversion•The ADC, The FPGA or microcomputer, Server / Client architecture, FFT magic, DSP, Panadapter and waterfall displays•Radio performance testing•Catalog of Software Defined radios – a comparison of 65 SDR receivers and transceivers•Glossary of abbreviations and acronyms•List of drawings and images
  • Amsats and Hamsats: Amateur Radio and other Small Satellites

    Andrew Barron

    eBook
Amsats and Hamsats provides a comprehensive guide to how you can communicate through amateur radio satellites and how to receive signals from other small satellites and 'weather' satellites. The book gets right into the techniques you will need for working amateur radio stations through amateur radio satellites, then moves on to listening, or watching, signals from other satellites. There are chapters answering questions like, ‘how do satellites stay in orbit’ and ‘why are they so expensive to launch?’ Followed by sections about the history of amateur radio satellites, the mathematics governing orbits, TLE files, different types of satellite and their orbits. The book covers the equipment you need, to track and use the amateur satellites and some of the satellite tracking software that is available. There are detailed sections covering transponders, satellite bands, feeders, masthead preamplifiers, antenna systems and automated rotator control. Plus chapters on the FUNcube Satellites, Weather Satellites and even the International Space Station. Amsats and Hamsats provides the ultimate guide to operating satellites and how they work. Its 368 pages are a great value guide to this stimulating and challenging area of amateur radio activity. If you want to get started, or you are already an experienced operator you will find something of value in these pages.

  • Matho: Or, the Cosmotheoria Puerilis, a Dialogue. in Which the First Principles of Philosophy and Astronomy Are Accomodated to the Capacity of Young ... Yet No Tincture of These Sciences, Volume 1

    Andrew Baxter

Paperback (Ulan Press, Aug. 31, 2012)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.
