  • Classic Philosophy for the Modern Man

    Andrew Lynn

eBook (Howgill House Books, July 28, 2017)
'What you hold in your hands is a handbook for living: it is an account of how the greatest minds have spoken to us on how to grow and prosper as flesh-and-blood human beings.' Classic Philosophy for the Modern Man is unlike any other philosophy book you may have read. It is inspired by a single concept: that, to thrive in the world, we need ready access to the practical wisdom of our forebears. Classic Philosophy for the Modern Man answers that need by introducing for the general reader the most powerful and enduringly relevant works of great thinkers from around the world, including: Plato, The Republic Aristotle, The Nicomachean Ethics Marcus Aurelius, Meditations Chuang-tzu, The Writings of Chuang-tzu Machiavelli, The PrinceCastiglione, The Courtier Gracián, The Art of Worldly Wisdom Hazlitt, 'On Success'Nietzsche, Beyond Good and EvilEmerson, 'Spiritual Laws' Together these works teach us how to achieve excellence; how to obtain and exercise power, advance in the world, and live gracefully; how to cultivate nobility of soul; and - above all - how to be one's own man. There is no better primer in the art of living well. This is the first book in the 'Classics for the Modern Man' series.

  • Classic Political Philosophy for the Modern Man

    Andrew Lynn

Paperback (Howgill House Books, March 27, 2019)
‘Just as in the parable of the boiling frog who does not perceive the gradual increase in the temperature of the water and is boiled alive, so we have by steady increments lost much of our liberty without realizing it. The works in this book cannot give that back; what they can do is to raise our consciousness of the many alternative paths we could have taken—and perhaps, if we have nerve enough, still can take.’Classic Political Philosophy for the Modern Man serves three purposes: it provides an introduction to the greatest political philosophers of the Western tradition; it allows these profound thinkers to speak to the assumptions and prejudices of our own era on topics ranging from democracy and human rights to equalism and speech laws; and it brings the most enduringly relevant of their works alive again for the modern reader. Presenting the very best of Western political philosophy, Classic Political Philosophy for the Modern Man introduces and includes selections from: Plato, RepublicAristotle, PoliticsMachiavelli, The Prince and DiscoursesHobbes, LeviathanLocke, Second Treatise of Government and A Letter Concerning TolerationRousseau, Discourse on Inequality and The Social ContractBurke, Reflections on the Revolution in FranceBentham, Anarchical FallaciesTocqueville, Democracy in AmericaBastiat, The LawMill, On LibertyRoosevelt, Citizenship in a RepublicThere is no better starting point for those who seek a genuinely fresh and insightful view on the major questions of our political existence.

  • Toby's Pony Puzzle

    Andrea Lynn

Paperback (Cotton Wolf Publishing, July 17, 2016)
The pony pals, Toby, Patches, and Chestnut, have a puzzle they need to solve. Their dear friend, Princess Tumble, has sent them an invitation to a very special party, but how will they get there? They are stuck! The big event is only one full moon away, and they have to hurry! Can they solve the puzzle in time? Spontaneous Still Life. The ponies weren’t originally cast as objects for a story. They began by doing the typical work that beloved stuffed animals accomplish every day for children all over the world. Each day the ponies made an appearance on the bed, sporting a different pose just for the sake of bringing a smile. They were more fun than decorative pillows. The poses were captured in images – just for giggles. After about a year, the story wove itself together, and the ponies came to life. Photography is forever an allure. For this project it served as the expression that built the story and brought the words into being. Projects like this may, in their very small ways, encourage a view of the world through a childlike lens. Happiness lives there. It’s like hugging your favorite stuffed animal, or your real life pony (Thanks, Toby!).
