In this children’s adventure fantasy Tom and Becky are transported to the First Kingdom by Dragworth. Their quest is to assist Princess Esmeralda in preventing the evil sorceress, Gorgath, from destroying the land. The penalty, if they fail, is that Gorgath will quickly ravage the First Kingdom and continue her devastation in our own world. Unfortunately Tom’s young sister, Kerry—a bit of a pest—tags along uninvited, is captured by Gorgath and adds to Tom’s dilemma. He can’t very well abandon her when he is supposed to be babysitting—what would his mother say? Will Princess Esmeralda prevent Gorgath, evil sorceress, from destroying the First Kingdom? Can Tom free his sister Kerry from captivity and return home? Can they unite and use their powers to prevent the destruction of Esmeralda’s kingdom?Although humorously narrated the story touches on important contemporary issues such as protection of the environment and, at a more individual level, adolescent feelings of isolation and powerlessness. During their quest the children are forced to identify and face their own private struggles; whilst questing to save the kingdom from Gorgath they are forced to abandon their own worries and join forces over greater issues. Problems which seemed overwhelming previously are reduced to their proper proportion. Each narrator takes the reader into his confidence drawing him into the adventure. It is this quality that makes the book and its characters special. It is an ideal read for children between the ages of 8 to 13 years.About the AuthorSpecialist English teacher Alison Jean Thomas works with children of all ages and capabilities. She believes that the old proverb, 'you can drag a horse to water but you can't make him drink' is applicable to kids and books. "It takes exciting, fast-moving plots and interesting characters to get your child beyond the first few paragraphs of a novel." She insists. "Once you've got them hooked they'll continue to the very last page and then wish there was more." That's why she decided that Soaring Dragons should be the first of the First Kingdom series.
