Not illustrated. 1884 Excerpt: ... air like shadows without the whisper of a rustle, they contrived to set everything together by the ears. The chairs made fierce assaults upon the plethoric sofas; the tongs gave the shovel no peace till both fell down on the hearth together, dragging pans and kettles after them in one dire clatter. Doors sprang open and slammed to again, windows raised themselves and fell with a crash of glass, sending shudders and thrills to the heart of every startled sleeper. Not a soul dared to peep from under coverlet after the first affright. Even the cattle lowed piteously, and the horses, growing wild with terror, kicked their stalls to fragments in the efforts to break away. The good sisters kept up their ingenious pranks until every soul in the castle, from master down to foot-boy was well-nigh bereft of sense and courage. No expense was spared by the lord of Laurenstein for the quieting of his perturbed household. Famous exorcists, brought from distant cities, used their utmost art, and exhausted every expedient that could be contrived; but all to no purpose. Spells were pronounced at which the whole realm of Belial was wont to quake; the thresholds were besprinkled with thrice consecrated water, from which ordinary demons would have scattered like flies before the house-maid's broom; yet these ghostly Amazons still remained obdurate and invincible, and defended their ancient title to the domain with such mortal vigor, that the bones of a famous saint of the opposite sex, on being scandalously brought into the sacred virginal precincts, sprang out of the reliquary and incontinently took to flight. But at last a famous exorcist, who went through Germany spying out witches and relieving haunted houses, was so fortunate as to catch them napping one day, and immedia...

  • Pictures of Country Life

    Alice Cary

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 20, 2018)
Excerpt from Pictures of Country LifeThe rain had fallen slowly and continuously since midnight - and it was now about noon, though a long controversy among the hands had decided the time, finally to be three o'clock no one among the dozen of them had a watch, except Lem Lyon, the most ill-natured, the least accommodating of all the work-hands on the farm, and no man ventured to inquire of him, for he was more than ordinarily unamiable to-day, and lay on the barn-door apart from his work-mates, with a bundle of oat-straw for his pillow, and his hat pulled over his eyes, taking no part in the discussion about the time, and affecting to hear nothing of it.One after another stepped forth, and essayed to see his shadow, but in vain - one after another looked Iup at the sky, and guessed at the whereabouts of the sun, but it was only guessing, for many a day has looked brighter after sunset than did that one at high moon. There was a half-holiday among the men, and as it had happened to fall the day after Sunday, it was less welcome than as if it had brought a log-rolling, brush-burning, or stone quarrying with it, for people little used to leisure are apt to find it lying heavily on their hands.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • From Year to Year

    Alice Cary

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 18, 2018)
Excerpt from From Year to YearThe owners of these teams decorated their horses with collars of bear's skin, over which they hung strings of bells, and the jingling of these is the first music I remember. The road which crossed this was of less impor tance. It was overgrown, except a narrow tract, with grass, where the sheep and cattle of the poorer people found their pasture; nor was it bordered with so populous and well-to-do a people as the other road - for while the one was dotted all along with thrifty farm-houses, meadows, and orchards, the other had only clearings here and there, and, as well as I remember, could not 'boast of a single painted house.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
