Not illustrated. 1873 Excerpt: ...so lily fair, In her sadness, in her gladness, Stealing round me unaware; Dusky shadows of the cairngormi All among her golden hair. Haply, so did willful Annie, With the tender eyes and mouth, And the languors and the angers Of her birth-land of the South: Still my darling was my darling--"I can love," I said, "for both." So I left the pleasure-places, Gayest, gladdest, best of all--Hedge-row mazes, lanes of daisies, Bluebirds' twitter, blackbirds' call--For the robbing of the crow's nest, For the games of race and balL So I left my book of poems Lying in the hawthorn's shade, Milky flowers sometimes for hours Drifting down the page unread. "He has found a better poet; I will read with him," I said. Thus he led me, hither, thither, To his young heart's wild content, A Childs Wisdom. Where so surly and so curly, With his black horns round him ben. Fed the ram that ruled the meadow--For where'er he called I went: Where the old oak, black and blasted, Trembled on his knotty knees, Where the nettle teased the cattle, Where the wild crab-apple trees Blushed with bitter fruit to mock us; 'Twas not I that was to please: Where the ox, with horn for pushing-Chafed within his prison stall; Where the long-leaved poison-ivy Clambered up the broken wall: Ah! no matter, still I loved him First and last and best of all. When before the frowning master Late and lagging in we came, I would stand up straight before him, And would take my even blame: Ah! my darling was my darling; Good or bad 'twas all the same. One day, when the lowering storm-cloud South and east began to frown, Flat along the waves of grasses, Like a swimmer, he lay down, A Childs Wisdom. With his head propped up and resting On his two arms strong and brown. On the sloping ri...

Not illustrated. 1884 Excerpt: ... air like shadows without the whisper of a rustle, they contrived to set everything together by the ears. The chairs made fierce assaults upon the plethoric sofas; the tongs gave the shovel no peace till both fell down on the hearth together, dragging pans and kettles after them in one dire clatter. Doors sprang open and slammed to again, windows raised themselves and fell with a crash of glass, sending shudders and thrills to the heart of every startled sleeper. Not a soul dared to peep from under coverlet after the first affright. Even the cattle lowed piteously, and the horses, growing wild with terror, kicked their stalls to fragments in the efforts to break away. The good sisters kept up their ingenious pranks until every soul in the castle, from master down to foot-boy was well-nigh bereft of sense and courage. No expense was spared by the lord of Laurenstein for the quieting of his perturbed household. Famous exorcists, brought from distant cities, used their utmost art, and exhausted every expedient that could be contrived; but all to no purpose. Spells were pronounced at which the whole realm of Belial was wont to quake; the thresholds were besprinkled with thrice consecrated water, from which ordinary demons would have scattered like flies before the house-maid's broom; yet these ghostly Amazons still remained obdurate and invincible, and defended their ancient title to the domain with such mortal vigor, that the bones of a famous saint of the opposite sex, on being scandalously brought into the sacred virginal precincts, sprang out of the reliquary and incontinently took to flight. But at last a famous exorcist, who went through Germany spying out witches and relieving haunted houses, was so fortunate as to catch them napping one day, and immedia...
