  • So, This Is Christmas!

    Fredericks

    eBook (Fredericks, Dec. 21, 2012)
Is Christmas really only about shopping or partying? Frederick’s stories show us that sometimes even the simplest things can make the greatest difference to people…Consider young Manuela, in a refugee camp, for whom each day promises nothing but dreary chores; nor does Christmas hold any hope of change. Until, that is, the visit of two strangers. There is also Simon, from well-to-do family, whose plan of a day with his best friend takes an unexpected turn. The brush with disaster prompts a serious rethink of his relationships. Similarly, James’ close encounter with danger thrusts him into a totally reversed experience with his peers. Finally, what would Christmas be like without Santa Claus? That is the question that Kate and others in the neighbourhoods are compelled to confront. The stories generate warmth, sobriety, as well as a sense of optimism for the reader. They are good for all the family: one's own children, nephews, nieces, and friends' children, too...

  • On One Flower

    A. Fredericks

Library Binding (San Val, Sept. 16, 2006)
Teachers, here is an elementary insect field trip between covers from Tony Fredericks, a funny but very astute professor. The trip takes place all on one flower, a goldenrod, which is practically a minibeast park. A butterfly sipping nectar . . . a ladybug snacking on aphids . . . oh ladybug, look out for the ambush bug! Dr. Fredericks focuses on the whole plant-and-animal community inhabiting a single flower. Two pages of Field Notes and fun facts at the back of the book offer intriguing information on these creatures.

    Frederick Wicks

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Jan. 18, 2018)
Excerpt from Golden Lives: The Story of a Woman's CourageThere's the last, said Shorter, as he sent a batch of paper flying; and now we'll shut the window. There's nothing like a railway train for dispersing correspondence. But a Yorkshire moor was not oblivion. It happened that the wind was driving with considerable force almost at right angles to the train and as the fragments of Shorter's cor respondence left his hand they scudded along the sides of the carriages, rattling against the windows as they passed, and Spreading out like 'a fan, some going over the top of the train, some passing under, and other pieces sticking on the handles of the doors and other projections, pinned there by the wind. It chanced that among the passengers amused by the flight of the Shorter correspondence was a solitary occupant of a first-class carriage, named Joseph Eales, who raised his eyes from his book at the sound of the paper clattering on the glass. Eales was a young man of strikingly accu rate features, an excellent row of teeth, dark brown hair, and almost black eyes of singular keenness. He wore a travelling suit, and appeared to be of an amiable disposition, yet capable withal of pursuing a purpose with un faltering determination.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
