  • Albina: A Windflower Saga Novella

    Aleksandra Layland

    language (, Oct. 12, 2016)
Bronze Medalist in the 2018 Global eBook Awards for Fantasy Fiction/Other World. We meet Albina in the epic fantasy novel "Far Haven: A Quest For Certitude. A Fight for Justice." (Part III of the Windflower Saga trilogy). She is the only daughter of Tribune Loris Kennet of Pomerania and Lady Keridwen, the former Duchess of Ansgar, of Kimbria. Albina and her brothers grow up in the only mixed-race family in the city. However, we know little about her beyond the details of her birth and that she attends university to study science. This novella fills in the gap, following her from childhood until she leaves home at sixteen to begin her higher education; and then her adventures, struggles, and triumphs as she helps her friends, comes to grips with her mixed-race, multicultural identity, pursues her higher education, and experiences her first romance.Told in Albina's words and from her perspective, it's a charming take on its own. For fans of The Windflower Saga, it's a wonderful expansion on the Pomeranian and Kimbrian descendants of Duke Ansgar and High Chief Keholani.
  • Swords of Ansgar: A Windflower Saga Novella

    Aleksandra Layland

    language (, Dec. 29, 2016)
Set in the Kingdom of Kimbria but at two different time frames, “Swords of Ansgar” tells the adventures and sweet romances of two members of the royal Ansgar family. Keridwen Rose of Ansgar is the young granddaughter of Lord Leofric and Lady Keridwen, the heroic protagonists of the epic fantasy novel "Of Wisdom and Valor: The Art of War. The Path of Peace." (Part II of the Windflower Saga trilogy). She lives in a medieval-like time. Her love for the unique Helvellyn sword, which her grandfather wielded as a master, inspires her to leave home and study "The Way of the Sword," a philosophy of life based on virtue and justice, by marrying a Helvellyn sword master whom she has just met. However, she didn’t anticipate their ship being attacked at sea by pirates who threatened all their lives. Far into the future of Kimbria, another young woman in the Ansgar family also has an interest in studying the Helvellyn sword; however, she does so as a world-class fencing athlete. Kimbria “Kimmy” Ke’ilani is the daughter of the Queen of Kimbria, who is mentioned briefly in "Far Haven: A Quest for Certitude. A Fight for Justice." (Part III of the Windflower Saga trilogy). , lives in a far more advanced technological age. Kimmy is also inspired to leave her home and follow "The Way of the Sword" when she encounters a sword master from the Helvellyn school. However, a crime syndicate has other plans for her when she inadvertently stumbles into their activities and they are shut down.On its own, this novella is simply an entertaining story about women who are devoted to the study of fencing, and it can be enjoyed by both adult and young adult readers alike. The romantic elements are clean and sweet. For fans of the Windflower Saga, this story provides two things of more interest: First, a more detailed glimpse at the return of Lady Keridwen to Kimbria in her elder years, and her introduction to her grandchildren there, as they were all born while she was outside the Kingdom. It also carries the royal Ansgar family into the space age and shows the continuing care and preservation of the indigenous Kimbrii culture through their mixed-race descendants. The two parts of “Swords of Ansgar” are also separately included in “The Wisdom and Valor Treasury” and “The Far Haven Treasury,” recipients of a Silver Medal in Fantasy Fiction and a Gold Medal in Romance in the 2017 FAPA (Florida Authors and Publishers Association) Book Contest.

The fourth story is a short chapter book, "Keri and Kalina," which is the story of two cousins aged 10 and 7 who are orphaned or left with only one parent and share a room at a boarding school run by nuns. Throughout all of the stories, the beautiful land of Kimbria, and especially the homeland of the indigenous Kimbrii people and their mixed-race descendants, and the animals who live there with them, are strongly featured. In "Keri and Kalina," the role of family relationships and boarding school adventures, as well multicultural experiences in a fantasy setting, are also emphasized.
