  • A Certain Spot In The Woods

    A Bates

eBook (Auline Bates, Dec. 4, 2012)
Casey begins having strange dreams of a cloudy, foggy room where she meets her future self. The subject they discuss is murder. Their own! If she can believe a dream, it seems neither the current or the future Casey has very long to live. If that weren’t bad enough, on her way to school she encounters an actual spot of dread in the woods that only she can feel. That’s very unpleasant and she has no idea what it means but she's way too busy to think about dread and dying! Dreams aren't real, anyway; or are they? Unfortunately, Casey will have to believe in them if she wants to live long enough to turn in her project and maybe make the newspapers! With the help of her older self, Casey has to figure out how to prevent her own murder, twice.

language (Auline Bates, Dec. 5, 2012)
It is 1968. Best friends, Ronnie and Sarah are twelve years old. It is their last summer. Junior High will start in the fall, but for now the girls are free to climb trees, ride bikes and sneak out of the house for midnight adventures. The Viet Nam war is at first a distant background to their summer, but Ronnie’s brother could be drafted to fight in Viet Nam if he can’t get into college. Her older sister’s new friends might have new and interesting ideas, but they are not quite as innocent as they seem, and the anti-war protests grow more violent all over the country. Suddenly being grounded or checking on the pollywogs doesn’t seem so important to Ronnie. When the issues of the day begin to intrude on the girls’ idyllic summer, they will explode in a tragedy their families will never forget.

Or else they’re adding up to something really bad. Merchandise is missing, a fellow employee is coming on too strong, and it looks like Darik was two-timing her with another girl. About the Book An almanac is an annual publication that lists a set of events in the following year, including such information as weather forecasts, farmers' planting dates, tide tables, and other data in tabular form. Celestial figures and a wide range of statistics are to be found in almanacs, including the rising and setting times of the Sun and Moon, dates of eclipses, hours of high and low tides, and dates of religious festivals. In the United States Benjamin Franklin began publishing Poor Richard's Almanack from 1733-1758, and Benjamin Banneker, a free African-American, published a number of almanacs from 1792 to 1797.
