  • The Giant Killer

    Charlotte Maria Tucker

Hardcover (Lamplighter publishing, Aug. 16, 2004)
Charlotte Maria Tucker, English author, who wrote under the pseudonym A.L.O.E. (a Lady of England), was the daughter of Henry St George Tucker (1771-1851), a distinguished official of the British East India Company. From 1852 till her death she wrote many stories for children, most of them allegories with an obvious moral, and devoted the proceeds to charity. The plot of "The Giant Killer" subtitled "The Battle which All Must Fight" features ten year old twins, Constantine and Adolphus who are chagrined to be shipped off to a private tutor in the country. Their lot appears worse when they meet their host and his family, consisting of a wife, son Aleck (who imagines himself the perfect student) and two little girls. On top of that, they are expected to study. Fun seems in short supply when they are not even allowed to pull the cow's tail, and there is no second dinner provided. This allegorical tale can be a simple, amusing story or a lesson to us all.

  • The Claremont Tales: Illustrations of the Beatitudes

    A.L.O.E. (Charlotte Maria Tucker)

    Paperback (Curiosmith, Sept. 8, 2015)
Twelve beatitudes are illustrated by twelve stories, one to a chapter. When Lucy Claremont was denied a trip to the fair by her mother, discontent and rebellion took over, but ended in repentance and mourning over her sin. When a blind girl thirsted for knowledge of the Lord, her desires were more than granted. Mercy is shown when a very sick person is carried out of a burning building. A.L.O.E. states: “I have endeavored in the following Tales to convey religious instruction in a form that may prove attractive to the young; to illustrate the character of true Christianity in a series of stories, practically exemplifying the beatitudes.”

  • Edith And Her Ayah, And Other Stories

    A. L. O. E. (Charlotte Maria Tucker) (Author)

    eBook (, March 25, 2020)
Edith And Her Ayah, And Other Stories is a beautiful illustrated Children’s stories book by A. L. O. E.. Edith was a good little child, and made no resistance, though she looked wistfully into the bushes after the fawn, and called out to it again and again in hopes of luring it back. Motee attempted to return to the tents, but did not feel sure of the way,—the vegetation around grew so high that she could scarcely see two yards before her. She walked some steps with Edith in her arms, then stopped and looked round with a frightened air.“Motee, why don’t you go on?” asked Edith.“O Missee Baba, we’re lost!” cried the poor Hindu; “lost here in the dreadful jungle, full of wild beasts and snakes!”Edith stared at her ayah in alarm, yet at that moment the little child remembered her mother’s lessons. “Don’t be so frightened, Motee,” said the fair-haired English girl; “the Lord Jesus can save us, and show us the way to mamma.”
