  • Text-Book of Entomology: Including the Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology and Metamorphoses of Insects; For Use in Agricultural and Technical Schools and ... by the Working Entomologist

    Alpheus S. Packard

Paperback (Forgotten Books, May 16, 2017)
Excerpt from Text-Book of Entomology: Including the Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology and Metamorphoses of Insects; For Use in Agricultural and Technical Schools and Colleges as Well as by the Working EntomologistIn instructing small classes in the anatomy and metamorphoses of insects, it was strongly felt that the mere dissection and drawing of a few types, comprising some of our common insects, were by no means sufficient for broad, thorough work. Plainly enough the laboratory work is all important, being rigidly disciplinary in its methods, and affording the foundation for any farther work. But to this should be added frequent explanations or formal lectures, and the student should be required to do collateral reading in some general work on structural and developmental entomology. With this aim in view, the present work has been prepared.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. • A Guide to the Study of Insects, and a Treatise on Those Injurious and Beneficial to Crops: For the Use of Colleges, Farm-Schools, and Agriculturists

    Alpheus Spring Packard Jr.

Paperback (Forgotten Books, Feb. 10, 2018)
Excerpt from A Guide to the Study of Insects, and a Treatise on Those Injurious and Beneficial to Crops: For the Use of Colleges, Farm-Schools, and AgriculturistsThe typical Crustacean cannot be said to have a true head, in distinction from a thorax bearing the organs 'of locomotion, but rather a group of rings, to which are appended the organs of sensation and locomotion. Hence we find the appendages of this region gradually changing from antennae and jaws to foot-jaws, or limbs capable of eating and also of locomotion; they shade into each other as seen in Fig. 9. Sometimes the jaws become remarkably like claws or the legs resemble jaws at the base, but towards their tips become claw-like; gill-like bodies are sometimes attached to the foot-jaws,'and thus', as stated by Professor J. D. Dana in the introduction to his great work on the Crustacea of the United States Exploring Expedi tion, the typical Crustaceans do not have a distinct head,' but rather a head-thorax (cephalothorax).About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
