It was with considerable reluctance that I abandoned infavor of the present undertaking what had long been afavorite project, that of a new edition of Shelton’s “ Don Quixote,” which has now become a somewhat scarce book. Thereare some —and I confess myself to be one —for whom Shelton’s racy old version, with all its defects, has a charm thatno modern translation, however skilful or correct, could possess.Shelton had the inestimable advantage of belonging to thesame generation as Cervantes ; Don Quixote ” had to him avitality that only a contemporary could feel ; it cost him nodramatic effort to see things as Cervantes saw them ; there isno anachronism in his language ; he put the Spanish of Cervantes into the English of Shakespeare. Shakespeare himselfmost likely knew the book ; he may have carried it home withhim in his saddle-bags to Stratford on one of his last journeys,and under the mulberry tree at New Place joined hands witha kindred genius in its pages.But it was soon made plain to me that to hope for evena moderate popularity for Shelton was vain. His fine oldcrusted English would, no doubt, be relished by a minority,but it would be only by a minority. His version has strongclaims on sentimental grounds, but on sentimental groundsonly. His warmest admirers must admit that he 'is not a satisfactory representative of Cervantes. His translation of theFirst Part was very hastily made —in forty days he says inhis dedication —and, as his marginal notes show, never re- vised by him. It has all the freshness and vigor, but also afull measure of the faults, of a hasty production.

Don Quixote has become so entranced reading tales of chivalry that he decides to turn knight errant himself. While Quixote's fancy often leads him astray—he tilts at windmills, imagining them to be giants—Sancho acquires cunning and a certain sagacity. Unfortunately, Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza are met with a host of ill-intentioned characters, and the pair often find themselves the butt of a joke rather than chivalrous saviors. This renowned tragic comedy, written by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, was first published in Spain in two parts in 1605 and 1615. This is an unabridged version of John Ormsby's English translation from 1885.

First published in the year 1615; the present book 'Don Quijote' by Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra is a Spanish novel which is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature and one of the earliest canonical novels; it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published.

In the village of La Mancha lives a fifty-year-old man, an old-fashioned gentleman who always has with him a lance, an old target, a scrawny horse, and a greyhound. He eats more beef than mutton and three-fourths of his income is spent on food; he spends the rest on velvet robe and slippers for holidays and a suit of the very best homespun cloth for the rest of the year. His family includes a fortyish housekeeper, a teen-aged niece, and a serving man who works both inside and outside of the estate and can saddle a horse. The gentleman is fit and hearty, a lover of hunting, and according to tradition his surname is Quixana, though that is not a certainty.

Cervantes wished to, reveal in their true light, the farcical, extravagant, nonsensical Libros ale Caballeria (books on knight-errantry), which put forth a false ideal, ignoring the true chivalry of a true knight, and by this false ideal did great harm in Spain. The result was Don Quixote, which is at the same time a novel, a satire, a history and a picture of Spanish life. Do not thinkthat Cer vantes mocked the great' ideals of chivalry. He loved truth, uprightness and courage - his own career provesw tihs - but he wished to Show that valour, generosity, hope and justice were the bases of chivalric life. Don Quixote has been thought to be mad, but if mad ness consists in going through the world seeking to combat ignorance, cruelty, superstition and roguery, we must confess that he was not sane, and saw life in a mirage of the vicious books on chivalry.Sancho Panza is a very human personage.
