Leo Politi was an author and illustrator whose works often celebrated cultural diversity. In the 1930s, Politi sketched, painted and sold drawings alongside other artists-in-residence on Olvera Street in Los Angeles. He had an affinity for Mexican-American culture and folkways, and loved natural, spontaneous children. Politi painted a mural on Olvera Street of "The Blessing of the Animals" that is related to the delightful story of Juanita, his third book.
