The Garahai lords no longer die. The mighty Lion-Lizards now endure for centuries, granted extended life by the screaming stones that power their technology. Their own offspring are denied a share in their dominion; new generations of Garahai cubs live and die in the tranquil gardens of the mortal realm, without ever attaining adulthood. Rich temples control the garden population, keeping the cubs innocent and obedient. They worship the distant, unseen lords as deities.
Ghraddik, a restless, curious cub, is forced to flee his hometown when his doubts collide with temple law. His chance encounter with Jotter, a feisty female cub, shows him a world more vast and dangerous than he ever imagined. Defying the taboos that segregate their sexes and pursued by brutal temple enforcers, Ghraddik and Jotter scramble from one garden to the next, on a desperate quest for truth and freedom.
