Second Treatise of Government

eBook (Digireads.com Publishing April 16, 2016)
John Locke’s “Second Treatise of Government” constitutes the second portion of his “Two Treatises of Government” which was first published 1689. In the first treatise Locke presents an extended attack against Robert Filmer’s “Patriarcha”, which calls for a government based entirely on divinely ordained absolute monarchy. Locke views Filmer’s assertion as absurd and one which will only lead to slavery. In the second treatise Locke sets forth the basic principles of natural law by which he believes man should be governed. Locke covers such themes as conquest and slavery, property, representative government, and the right of revolution. The “Second Treatise of Government” remains to this day a highly influential work if political science and helped to lay the foundation for many of the principles of western democracy.
