The relationship between the goddess Hera, who was the wife of Zeus, Hercules father, was always toxic, due to her jealousy of Zeus' apparent favouritism towards Hercules. It began when he was an infant, when she sent two poisonous snakes into his crib. The baby was found with a choked snake in each hand! Zeus had disguised himself as the husband of Alcmene and impregnated her with twin sons, Hercules and Iphicles. Hera knew of Zeus' infidelity and attempted to delay the birth of the twins permanently, but her plot was discovered by Alcmene's servant, Galanthis, and the babies were delivered. Fear of Hera's revenge led Alcmene to expose the infant Heracles on the mountain slopes, but he was taken up and brought to Hera by his half-sister Athena, who played an important role as protectress of heroes. Hera did not recognize Heracles and nursed him out of pity. Heracles suckled so strongly that he caused Hera pain, and she pushed him away. Her milk sprayed across the heavens and there formed the Milky Way. But with divine milk, Heracles had acquired supernatural powers. Athena brought the infant back to his mother, and he was subsequently raised by his parents. In this manner, Hercules became a Demi-God. He had many super powers, but also many human weaknesses due to his initial rejection by Hera and her subsequent attempts to have him killed. Hera teamed up with the god Eurystheus to set nine labors for Hercules to complete in order for him to achieve immortality and join his father, Zeus, on Mount Olympus. This book tells the story of the first six of the total twelve set tasks. (Three had been disallowed by Eurystheus and Hera)
