Ashes in Waiting

Fresh out of college, Callie Casali thought she knew what to expect upon taking a reporter position with the Hollowbrook Herald, a weekly community newspaper. The job would mostly involve generic coverage of town meetings and senior center items and school happenings, she assumed, with the occasional car accident or house fire to dominate the headlines.

But Callie soon discovers that Hollowbrook, Massachusetts, is vastly different from its rural neighbors. In Hollowbrook, the politics are poisonous – and the car wrecks may not be accidents at all. When a handful of town officials die under mysterious circumstances, it’s up to Callie to navigate the darkness and uncover the truth.

Journalism, she learns, isn’t merely the act of reporting happenings but telling stories. When the tendrils of darkness threaten her loved ones as well, she realizes that the most dangerous killers are often those which attack from within. And the worst threats can arrive from the most unexpected places.
