“It isn't possible to love and part. You will wish that it was. You can transmute love, ignore it, muddle it, but you can never pull it out of you. I know by experience that the poets are right: love is eternal.”
E. M. Forster’s A Room With A View is ranked 79th on the Modern Library’s list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It was adapted into an Oscar-winning movie in 1985.
Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century. When Lucy Honeychurch and chaperone Charlotte Bartlett find themselves in Florence with rooms without views, fellow guests Mr Emerson and son George step in to remedy the situation. Meeting the Emersons could change Lucy's life forever but, once back in England, how will her experiences in Tuscany affect her marriage plans?
The main themes of this novel include repressed sexuality, freedom from institutional religion, growing up and true love.
