Apart from lions, domestic cats are the only cats known to live in groups.
The African wildcat, which still thrives today in North Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, was the ancestor of all of today’s domestic cats.
A cat’s tongue is covered by tiny hook-like bristles called papillae. Even big cats have tongues like this, but they use them primarily for ripping the flesh of prey, while domestic cats use it mainly for grooming.
Cats are obligate carnivores. This means they must eat meat. A cat’s intestines are especially made for a meat diet, which is why they have a hard time digesting fruits and vegetables, especially those rich in carbohydrates.
Cats are good at picking up high-pitched sounds – up to 64 kHz. That’s six octaves higher than the human range and even one octave higher than a dog’s.
