Struggling Upward or Luke Larkin's Luck

Hardcover (AL Burt Sept. 3, 1909)
SYNOPSIS: "Alger's stories for boys are honorable heroes who convey lessons of pluck, perseverance, and independence. Luke Larkin was the son of a carpenter's widow. He worked where he could and was janitor at the school which he attended. When the teacher of the school challenged the boys to a ice skating race, Luke was the best skater but a friend of the rich Banker's son skated in front of Luke causing him to fall and lose the race. Later that night Luke was stopped by a man on a path that asked him to keep a tin box for him until his return and he gave Luke a bank-bill for his trouble. Then Luke is invited to a birthday party where the Banker's son would also be attending."
