The boat, the Hoosier, was the property of Mrs. Van Volst, the widow of a notorious rather than famous American multi-millionaire. She was giving a dinner on board, to be followed by a dance. Had he chosen Philip Ford might have been among the guests. Now as he stood there, solitary, listening, watching, be rather wished that he had consented to join the revels later. He would have at least been free to follow his mood.
