Can You Forgive Her?
(IDB Productions Jan. 1, 2016)
Anthony Trollope was an influential 19th century who remains to this day one of the most prominent and respected writers of all time. His success in the Victorian period of the mid 1800s has been widespread mainly due to his influential novel, Chronicles of Barsetshire, but also because of his numerous well-written and well-received works about politics. Can You Forgive her? is the first of six Trollope novels dealing with the social and political scene of the era, in this case focusing mainly on the social aspect. The book’s main storyline follows the progress of Glencora and Plantagenet Pallister, a married couple which has to cope not only with the challenges of married life, but also with Plantagenet’s newly launched political career that leads his wife to question whether or not she can lead a happy life, and to long for the man she was forced to give up in favor of a genuine sham of a marriage.Trollope also introduces us to Alice Vavasor, a beautiful and intelligent young woman who is, however, torn between the choice of marrying two gentlemen. Once she accepts and rejects both of their proposals for marriage, she is left confused and undecided on her ultimate choice.Although the author eventually focuses this series of novels on politics, this initial exploration of the relationship between politics and the social aspirations of men and women during the Victorian period is quite an enlightening venture into the psychology of marriage and the pursuits of “higher” goals. Is there any value in progressing in social rank without the benefit of a happy heart? Can true love prevail through the challenges and rules imposed by a society based on strict social norms?
