How often the painter, after having spoiled his first work by some intellectual modification, has said to himself, Oh, how I wish I had let it alone.

The autobiographe'r, if he be not a literary man, first hesitates through sheer cowardice I hnaw did. He no sooner dips his pen than the thought at once rushes upon him that booh-mahing is a trade lihe every other, and he is aghast at his own vanity which made him think for a moment that he could at once accomplish a tash which men of learning, taste, and experience would hesitate to under take. The dread of censure, the fear of ridicule start up lihe specters, and he drops his pen in dismay. But let him reflect upon the real nature of his tash and he will tahe courage, for he will realize that what he has undertaken can be best done by himself.
