Be Good, Harry

Hardcover (NY, Evanston, and London: Harper & Row (1967) Jan. 1, 1967) , 0th Edition
Harry, the protagonist, is a kitten. His mama has to go to help a sick friend, so she leaves him with someone else for the first time, Mrs. Brewster, the nice older lady next door. Before she leaves, his mother tells him, "Be good, Harry." Even though he had known that she was going, Harry hadn't understood that his mother would really leave him and becomes obstinate. How Mrs. Brewster consoles him (a cookie, stories, patience, and a loud laugh) makes a satisfying solution to a common dilemma. Harry standing bereft between departing mother and awaiting baby-sitter, crawling into the latter's capacious lap with his toys, hugging his mother when she returns; all drawn and described with a spare precision that echoes, a tender restraint that touches.
