Complete (the 3 volumes).Ellen Wood was a prolific novelist during the second half of the nineteenth century, writing using the name of Mrs. Henry Wood. Never considered amongst the front rank of novelists, during her lifetime or subsequently, she nevertheless had many admirers and a strong readership. Many critics at the time disliked her strong views on religious and social issues, but she wrote in such a way that captured the interest, with intriguing plots and likeable characters. She wrote of the people and countryside that she knew and loved as a girl and drew on her keen observations for the rest of her life. Initially she wrote short stories but on entering, and winning, a competition to write a novel extolling temperance, she was encouraged to tackle longer pieces of writing.
