Conceived as the secret journal of a woman "sentenced" by her physician-husband to a country rest cure, Gilman portrays a woman who longs to write, but is forbidden to by her husband--who insists that she remain completely inactive. Trapped, the narrator slowly creates an alternate reality of her own. In the involuntary confinement of her bedroom, the hero creates a reality of her own. Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860 - 1935) was a feminist lecturer and activist, and the author of Herland and Women and Economics.
