Once, there was a poor woodcutter and his wife;
and they lived a very miserable life.
They had a little girl they couldn’t feed;
for money and food was a great need.

As he toiled away in the forest deep;
the poor woodcutter began to weep.
All of a sudden there was a blinding light;
the woodcutter gasped in fright.

There was a lady with a crown of stars on her head;
she said, “Woodsman, there is no need to feel dread.”
“Bring me your daughter; I’ll give her care;
I will be her mother; this I swear.

She won’t feel pain or hunger at all,
this will happen if you heed my call.”
The little girl felt Mary’s motherly love,
and Mary took her to live in paradise above.

The little girl was cared for and happy was she;
she had everything to eat and she roamed free.
Then Mary called for the girl one day;
as she had something important to say.

“There are thirteen doors, you have the key;
I am going on a trip, you see.
“You can open all except for the last door;
I trust you with all this and more.”

The girl, now older, was happy with the trust;
to be reliable- she knew it was a must.
The doors opened to many a treasure;
these were gifts beyond measure.

She had opened rooms one to twelve;
but it was room thirteen that she wanted to delve.
One day she could take it no more;
she had to open the very last door.

And when she saw what was inside;
she felt a fear she could not hide.
Mary knew that the girl had something to hide;
she asked if the girl opened the last door and she lied.

Mary was sad because this was a test;
she had thought the girl would try her best.
So Mary made her mute and sent back to earth;
until she realized honesty’s worth.

Now it happened that a king passed by;
as the beautiful girl had fallen from the sky.
The king married her and she gave him a son;
but the Blessed Mary was not done.

She came to the princess and asked for the truth;
But the young lady was stubborn in all her youth.
She then lied to Mary once more;
that she didn’t open the thirteenth door.

So, Mary took away the princess’s son;
the king and his people couldn’t believe he was gone.
They wanted her death; to burn at the stake;
and the princess felt fear in her wake.

As she was surrounded and ready to burn;
she called for Mary and did she yearn.
She asked for forgiveness that she had lied;
And Mary was happy she did not hide.

Mary returned the little prince and everyone knew;
just what the princess had to go through.
Now the princess could also talk;
and she was also free to walk.

The princess told her king the story of her youth;
and what had happened because of truth.
Now she could live happy and just;
with her people and her family’s trust!

And the moral of this story is:

To be loved by your family and friends is a blessing. You can appreciate for this love by being honest to the people that love you. Lying can have many consequences, not only can it hurt the person who gave you their trust, you can also hurt others without meaning to and even hurt yourself. Be honest. It’s how you show you care.
