N 1895 the writer made a journey from Southampton, England, to Buenos Ayres, and crossed the Cordillera by the Transandine railroad and by mule, and visited the port cities on the west coast, studying all available sources of information in regard to the prospects of these develop ing countries, that several thoughtful writers have prophesied will one day rival the ancient nations of the world.
