Nicholas is staying with his friend Peter Perkins. One morning they are looking for something useful to do, when, suddenly, a train comes to a halt on the railway line at the end of Peter's garden, and an old lady looking out of the window accidentally drops her bag and her spectacles. At once Nicholas and Peter, not to mention the dog Jock, climb on the train to give them back to her. And they are still on board when the train starts to move again! This is the beginning of an exciting adventure for Nicholas, Peter - and Jock - as they find themselves not only in full control of the train but also having to think very quickly in order to prevent a collision with a very fast moving diesel engine!
