Grace Peregrine had one year of high school left before college, when she could start a normal life, a life where no one knew her as ‘pumpkin’. But a month into her senior year a package shows up at her front door, a package Grace is unable to resist, and soon her life is out of control.
A fire leaves Grace and her sister, Amy, orphaned. They move in with the wealthy Greene family where Grace would feel at home if it weren't for Wesley Greene, the boy who rendered her an outcast. He’s supposed to be off at college but keeps stopping by unexpectedly.
That all becomes trivial after Grace overhears the fire marshal tell Mrs. Greene that the fire was set on purpose making Grace question if there is a connection between the fire and the two red bumps that recently appeared on her back.
The only solace from the constant worry and questions, and Wesley’s prying eyes, comes when Justin St. George, the cutest boy in school starts paying her attention.
But when the bumps grow into bright red wings, and two mysterious men follow Grace home from school, she sets out to find the connections no matter what the cost.
