On the evening of Oct. 8, 1871, a fire began in a barn belonging to Patrick O'Leary's, of 137 De Koven Street, Chicago, Illinois. Victorious over a rain-starved city, exhausted firemen, and inadequate equipment, and aided by a steady wind, the small blaze grew into the Chicago fire, one of the most terrible disasters in the history of the city and that nation. Never again did a fire in the USA cause such extensive damage.
