It deals mainly with events and persons connected with the different aspects of life in the capital, in which, naturally, most of our time was passed, and which is pre-eminently the centre of japan's vitality to-day. I have described only such places as I visited, and more especially the remote hills where we took refuge from the summer heats, and whose every turn became as familiar and beloved as the garden of my childhood.
