This is a fable of Bermuda's discovery. The plight of lizards as a group is very sad and touching. Sam, whose nature is sweet and independent; is absolutely charming. Though he is a lizard, the reader can't help but identify with, and feel for, him. The vividness of the imagery and illustrations is stunning! The story draws the reader emotionally, while appealing as well to the senses. The thematic layering takes in ideas about fate; individual struggle and triumph; and the longing for, or resistance to, change.
