James Henry
Washington Square
Hardcover
(The Modern Library Aug. 16, 1950)
This is a small, gracefully proportioned, low-toned masterpiece. It is described by James himself, in a letter to William Dean Howell's, as "a tale purely American." This novel first appeared in 1881, and that it chronicles the remote America of the 1840's and 1850's, we must acknowledge that Washnington Square has in it somewhere the principle of permanence. It has extraordinary charm, deriving from an almost Mozartian combinagtion of sweetness and depth.
