Andrew Lang compiled a total of 25 anthologies of local folk tales of magic and adventure, commonly referred to as fairy books. Eleven of these books do not contain the term "Fairy Book", however. Of the fourteen "coloured" Fairy Books (each title as this one "The [Color] Fairy Book"), 12 were illustrated with etchings and color lithographs by HJ Ford. This book sees the intricate Victorian sensibilities of the Ford's work replaced with an art nouveau approach by Frederick Richardson.
