India is the seventh-largest country in the world by area, and the second-most populous one with over 1.2 billion people. Historically it was home to the urban Indus Valley Civilisation during the 3rd millennium BC, and was where the oldest scriptures associated with Hinduism were composed. Georgaphically the sub-continent is bounded by the Indian Ocean to the south, the Arabian Sea to the southwest, and by the Bay of Bengal in the southeast. India borders Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the northeast; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In international surveys India ranks highly on natural and cultural resources owing to its rich historical legacy, however in other aspects its tourism infrastructure remains somewhat underdeveloped.
