Kate Chopin was born Catherine O’Flaherty in St. Louis in 1850. Her father died when she was young, and she was raised in a home with her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, all widows. She married Oscar Chopin, a cotton merchant, but after having six children, she too was left a widow.
