After The Event- a mass nuclear war, nearly everything was killed. Plants shriveled, animals starved, and the waters dried up. Anyone who managed to survive only did so by murdering and plundering, even eating the flesh of other human beings. Five underground bunkers spread out over what used to be known as the United States of America saved mankind, made it possible for man to live and flourish once again.My name is Rosalind Winters, and I've lived in Bunker Three for my entire life. Here, inside of the bunker walls we are safe, we live in peace. The walls separate us from the deadly Wilds, and everything that manages to survive out there. All of the bunkers form Krateos, our new nation. To prevent chaos and disruption, we are led by the great Council, a body of the elite minds. When I turn eighteen, I will be given an injection to make me better, to give me an ability that will give me a place in Krateos. The Council will choose my career, even choose my spouse if it comes to it. The Council knows best. They are the reason we exist. Nobody questions the Council, bad things happen to those that do. I've learned to never voice my opinions in public, never to think I know better. But when I'm alone, or with only my family, I can't help but wonder, is there more?After Rosalind receives her injection, everything changes. She discovers that the world is not as it seems. She's faced with choices of love and loyalty, and the decisions she makes not only changes her life, but the lives of every single person she's ever cared about. It all comes down to one choice.
