The Buffalo Soldier is the third book in the Clarence Duval Series by veteran historian Dr. Rob Bauer. It is based on the true story of the 1896 Cree Deportation Act and features original research by the author. This is a story no one has seen in over 120 years.
Autumn of 1895. Driven from their home in Montana, Clarence Duval and Mary Healy travel east to St. Louis. Mary, an Irish-Chippewa girl of ten, has adopted Clarence as her father figure after the deaths of her parents. After being thrown from their train, however, the pair become stuck in northern Montana.
Homeless, they find shelter with the Métis people of Montana. Sadly, however, at the same time, the US Congress decides to deport the Montana Métis, falsely claiming they are Cree Indians who belong in Canada. Then, in a case of mistaken identity, Clarence and Mary become separated when circumstances force Clarence to join the 10th US Cavalry, also known as the Buffalo Soldiers.
In an epic story that sweeps across the high plains and mountains of 1890s Montana, Clarence and the Buffalo Soldiers get the task of rounding up the Montana Métis, including Mary Healy, and taking them to Canada. He must find a way to save Mary and then escape the cavalry to save himself.
The Buffalo Soldier is a tale of friendship, heroism, love, and sacrifice, set against the raw beauty of Montana, America's last western frontier.
