Kim spends the summer before her sophomore year in high school in San Diego, California, trying to find a family and a place to call home. She's has the summer to decide if the current family she’s living with will fit her needs. But her search for greener pasture comes with a few obstacles. Along with adjusting to the dynamics of living with a “normal” family, she has to figure out how to co-exist with Andrea, the territorial teenage girl who lives there. Kim befriends two girls, Quaneisha and Marrisa while taking a dance class. Both girls live with their foster mother in an environment that is just as dysfunctional as the one Kim left behind in Texas. Kim also meets Davion, the sexy swimming instructor who lives next door. As the challenges mount with her new family and her new friends introduce her to more trouble than she bargained for, Kim learns several valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and most importantly, survival.
