The House of Borgia which gained notoriety in Italian ecclesiastical and political affairs during the 15th and 16th century became famous for their unscrupulous behavior and many scandalous controversies that they were associated with during their time of prominence in Italy. The family produced to Popes, Alfons de Borja who ruled as Pope Calixtus III during 1455–1458, and Rodrigo Lanzol Borgia, as Pope Alexander VI, during 1492–1503. It is for the corrupt rule during the reign of Alexander VI that they are most remembered today, a time in which the family was accused of many different crimes, including adultery, simony, theft, rape, bribery, incest, and murder. "The Borgias" by Alexandre Dumas is chapter from the larger work "Celebrated Crimes" which recounts the criminal history of the family.
