They spoke under the direction of the Holy Spirit; and under the same direction the writers of the gospels, epistles, and the other books of the New Testament put down the word of God for the instruction of us and of all others who should live after those writers were taken from this life. Their work being complete, it cannot be altered. It can never be in the power of any man, or any number of men, to change the word of God. As God has given to us one book, and every thing in it and about it assures us that it is the only revelation we shall ever receive, and that it is the book by which we shall be judged, we are sure that it must stand by itself, above the power of men to add to it, or change it in the smallest particular. It is supposed by many wise persons, that what the apostle John records at the close of his vision, called the Revelation, was intended to apply to the whole Bible, as well as to that one book. " I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book; and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book." (Rev. xxii. 18,19.) These are the last words of the Divine testimony as given in the Holy Scriptures; and whether intended or not to apply to the whole volume, as well as to John's prophecy, they give us a solemn admonition of the danger of attempting to add to or take from any portion of the word of God.
