As a high school junior, Lucy Hale is no stranger to depression. Ever since her brother's death three years ago, she has focused her life on school studies and her passion for painting, just trying to forget that part of her life ever existed.But her focus quickly shifts when her little sister Chloe is put in a coma by a frenzied tornado of dark smoke--and it comes for her next! Lucy narrowly escapes with the help of Scott, an Officer who pulls Lucy into a layer behind Earth called the Dust and into the Depression Force, an organization dedicated to fighting back Depression. There, she's hit with the discovery that Depression is real and alive. They take the form of beings called Depression Agents, and each and every one of them desire to suck all other emotions out of everyone on Earth. Lucy learns the smoke that came after her and Chloe was a manifestation of her own Depression, and will drain the life of Chloe in forty-eight hours if Lucy doesn't stop it.Now Lucy will have to join sides with the Depression Force in order to free her sister from these Depression Agents. If she can't, Chloe's fate, and her own, will be much worse than she could ever imagine. To make matters worse, Lucy discovers a dark and a mysterious force causing mayhem in the Dust that seems to be real attached to ending her venture. Between this force and the other dark trials she must face, and her sister's life hanging in the balance, Lucy begins to wonder if her life wants anything but depression from her...Or if she'll be able to give anything else...
